SHE arrived home in the wee hours of the morning and went into her room to sleep.

The unemployed woman, 25, had no idea that in the next room, her mother, 48, a cashier, had been bound and gagged and was being sexually assaulted in what eventually became a horrifying six-hour ordeal.

The attacker, 27, a dispatch rider for a fast food restaurant, was so audacious that at one point, he even went to the kitchen to get a drink before continuing with his attack.

The young woman was also unaware that the attacker was someone she knew – her ex-boyfriend. Later that day, when she told him what had happened to her mother, he even asked her to keep him updated if she heard anything about the police investigations.

We are not naming them because there is a court order against identifying the victim. Yesterday, the man was sentenced to 25 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane by Justice Chan Seng Onn.

He pleaded guilty to four charges of aggravated rape, aggravated sexual assault by penetration, attempted aggravated rape and housebreaking by night.

Three other charges of theft, attempted aggravated rape and aggravated molest were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Tan Boon Khai and Chua Ying-Hong told the court that the man had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s flat to visit her in November 2008. They broke up 10 years ago but remained in touch.

While there, he saw a bunch of keys left on the television cabinet and decided to steal them. He asked his ex-girlfriend to get him a drink and when she went into the kitchen, he took the keys.

Then, five months later, on 3 Apr last year, the two were SMS-ing each other and he found out that she would be returning home late that day.

As he was in need of money, he decided to break into her flat using the keys he had stolen. He knew that his ex-girlfriend shared the flat with her mother, who is a divorcee.

The man packed an orange T-shirt, a pair of gloves and some masking tape into his haversack before leaving for the flat. He entered using the stolen keys shortly after 1am the next day. But before that, he used the orange T-shirt to cover his face, leaving only his eyes exposed.

Masking tape
The man, who was wearing his gloves, first went to check that his ex-girlfriend was not in her room. He did not go into her room because he knew that she had no valuables.

Instead, he went into her mother’s room and switched on the lights. The woman woke up, but the man covered her mouth with masking tape and told her to “shut up”. He then tied her arms to the bedpost.

Using masking tape and a piece of cloth he found in the flat, he covered her eyes and face, then tried to rape her, but was unsuccessful. When the masking tape over her mouth came loose, she asked him to let her go to the toilet, but he ignored her.

His ex-girlfriend returned home about three hours later at 4am and sent him an SMS asking him to call her the next day. The man panicked and remained quiet in the room. He stuffed a hair band into the woman’s mouth to prevent her from shouting.

After he heard his ex-girlfriend going into her bedroom, he went to the kitchen and got two bottles of water from the refrigerator as he was thirsty.

He then returned to the woman’s room and used a cloth to cover the gap under the room door to avoid being detected by his ex-girlfriend.

The man then molested the woman as she remained bound and gagged.

At about 5.30am, the woman’s handphone alarm sounded. It was during this time that he went on to sexually assault her with his fingers.

Following this, he tried to rape her but failed.

The woman later told him that she needed to go to the toilet. He again ignored her and instead, tightened the masking tape around her mouth.

The woman had no choice but to defecate and urinate on her bed. After cleaning her up, he again tried to rape her. This time, he was successful.

The man left the flat at about 7am. He later threw away his T-shirt and masking tape into a rubbish bin at the ground floor of his block.

He stole the woman’s handphone and $100.

By the time she managed to untie herself and call her sister for help, it was already past 8am. Her sister and brother-in-law arrived at her flat to find her crying and her arms still bound. They untied her and called the police.

The victim was given an emergency contraceptive by a doctor later that day to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Arrested
The man later sent his ex-girlfriend multiple SMS-es asking if the police had discovered any evidence. He also told her to let him know if there were any updates.

He was arrested on 23 Apr last year, after DNA found on the woman and her clothes were traced back to him.

In court yesterday, the man, who did not have a lawyer, asked for a copy of the court documents so that he could read them.

He wiped away tears as the details of his attack were read out by the prosecution, who said that he had treated her as his “personal sex slave”.

None of his family members turned up.

Among his charges, aggravated sexual assault by penetration and aggravated rape carried the highest penalty.

He could have been jailed 20 years and caned at least 12 strokes on each charge.

A SECURITY guard who caused a near accident along an expressway by neck-locking a cabby was jailed for six weeks yesterday.

Sukhdew Singh (right) is out on bail pending his appeal against the sentence. He had admitted to hurting cabby Cha Ban Koon while they were in his taxi along the Bukit Timah Expressway in September 2008.

The two men, both 54, got into a dispute over the mode of payment while the cabby was driving towards Sukhdew’s home in Choa Chu Kang. They decided to head to a police station, but argued over which one to go to.

By then, Mr Cha’s cab was on the expressway. Sukhdew then wrapped his left forearm around the victim’s neck. Mr Cha tried to get him to stop by biting him and lost control of the taxi, causing a lorry behind to almost hit his cab.

Sukhdew could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000.

A MAN who caused the death of his attendant while reversing a lorry at a carpark driveway was fined $6,000 and banned from driving all vehicles for four years on Monday.

Neo Yong Beng, 24, then a lorry driver, admitted to causing the death of Mr Neo Hui Yong, 23, who was guiding him in reversing the vehicle behind Block 11 Dempsey Road on Aug 15 last year.

The court heard that the two men were collecting glass bottles from the food and beverage outlets off Dempsey Road when the accident occurred.

When Neo first started reversing, he could see the victim in the left view mirror of the lorry, but lost sight of him later and assumed that the victim was not directly behind the lorry. He stopped reversing when he heard someone shout at him.

The court heard that after Mr Neo was hit, he was also dragged for a distance of about one metre by its rear left tyre.

Neo could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.

Swim coach filmed indecent acts with two boys on his phone

A SWIMMING coach sexually assaulted his six-year-old student at a condominium pool when they were alone together during their lessons.

Edwin Yap Chian Eng, 34, also badgered a nine-year-old boy in his neighbourhood and lured him into performing sexual acts on him – all for $5. He also recorded the lewd acts on his mobile phone.

The offences were committed between 2007 and 2008.

Yesterday, Yap, a father of two boys aged three and seven, was jailed for 24 years on four charges, including two for sexual assault. Three other similar charges were taken into consideration.

Justice Kan Ting Chiu did not mince his words as he sentenced Yap to jail and ordered him to be given 24 strokes of the cane.

“It’s clear to me that the actions that have brought you before this court today are truly reprehensible,” he said.

The offences were anything but “acts of impulse”.

The younger victim was entrusted into his care and Yap betrayed that trust by sexually assaulting him, the judge noted.

As for the older boy, Yap had been persistent in his approach and had even video-taped the lewd acts.

“Your acts were not isolated acts and they cannot in any way be described as acts of impulse,” Justice Kan said.

Noting that he was a father of two boys, the judge added that Yap should have spared a thought for his young victims.

“Did you think of the welfare of the victims when you committed the offences? Have you thought about the effect that your acts will have on them, now and in the future?” the judge said.

The offences came to light in September 2008, when the mother of the six-year-old student lodged a police report, alleging that Yap had sexually assaulted her son.

She had hired Yap in June that year to conduct swimming lessons for the boy at their condominium pool in the western part of Singapore.

But when they were alone, Yap sexually assaulted his young charge in the pool and the toilet.

In the same year, Yap also repeatedly coerced the second victim to perform sexual acts on him. He had befriended the boy in his housing estate in the northern part of Singapore after much effort and had convinced him with an offer of $5 cash to perform lewd acts on him.

In mitigation yesterday, Yap’s lawyer, Mr Wee Pan Lee, said his client was a polytechnic graduate who was declared a bankrupt in 2003 after his business failed.

Yap was remorseful, the lawyer said. He also submitted a letter from the man’s wife pleading for leniency, describing him as a dutiful father and caring husband.

Yap’s wife was in court and spoke to him briefly after he was sentenced.

For sexual assault, Yap could have been jailed a maximum of 20 years and caned at least 12 strokes on each charge.

14-year-old boy to say sorry for mosque fire

THE teen whose act of mischief with fire at a mosque in the East Coast led to $3.3 million in damage, is prepared to meet a mosque representative to say sorry at a family conference next week.

He is also expected to say what he will do to make amends.

The 14-year-old, who has a low IQ of 50, is still expected to be sentenced by the Juvenile Court after the conference; he is likely to be sent to the Singapore Boys’ Home or Muhammadiyah Welfare Home for a spell.

He has already admitted to setting two books alight at Masjid Kampung Siglap last Oct 6, an act which led to major damage. He also admitted to trespassing at Apex Harmony Lodge, a Pasir Ris nursing home, two days before.

Yesterday, Juvenile Court Judge Lim Keng Yeow told him the court would give him a chance to meet a mosque representative to say sorry, but this did not mean he would get away with a less severe court order.

He added: “You are not expected to compensate the mosque financially or completely, but there is surely something you could do… to put right the wrong.”

The boy’s father said he would advise his son to teach children at the mosque, since he was strong in religious knowledge.

“Saying sorry is definitely the right thing to do. I am glad the judge allows this to take place,” he said in Malay.
