Embassy car parked in bus lane: Is staff abusing diplomatic privileges?

embassy driver parks in bus lane thumbnail Embassy car parked in bus lane: Is staff abusing diplomatic privileges?

STOMPer John is appalled that embassy staff can get away with breaking laws in Singapore after spotting this embassy car parked in a bus lane near Funan Centre. Does diplomatic immunity cover this kind of illegal acts, the STOMPer asks.

The STOMPer said in an email:

"I have been following the case of the former Romanian Charge d’Affaires Dr. Silviu lonescu in extreme shock.

"What does diplomatic immunity actually mean?

"I seriously doubt it means that embassy staff and personnel are permitted to go about their daily lives, breaking laws under a name or umbrella of diplomatic immunity.

"Here is a recent incident that I have photographed.

"An embassy driver had parked or stopped in a bus lane on Saturday, 27 Feb, at about 5pm or later, in front of the Hill Street side of Funan Centre.

"He was having a smoke break while waiting for some embassy staff member to perhaps finish shopping.

"Indeed, I doubt that this stop was in the capacity of an official embassy mission, requiring the driver to break a minor Singapore traffic law.

"Does diplomatic immunity cover this kind of law breaking acts?

"I seriously doubt it but I have often seen many embassy drivers in Singapore crossing the line.

"They break minor traffic laws, under the notion, perhaps, that they are covered under a name or umbrella of diplomatic immunity.

"This should be examined a bit closer and stopped."

Boys climb on top of sports car and post photos on Facebook

A STOMPer came across photos on Facebook, apparently taken by two boys who snapped themselves climbing on top of a sports car at a carpark.

The STOMPer said the boys are from the Singapore Sports School, based on their Facebook profiles and the photos they posted.

The sports car in the photos seems to be a Porsche.

Said the STOMPer:

"I don’t have any idea when did this incident took place or if they did anything else at the carpark.

"But perhaps sports car owners at the carpark might unknowingly have these kids’ footprints on their cars."

According to the comments on the Facebook account, the boys pulled the daring stunt after a friend’s birthday party.

Friends of the two boys had also commented on their daring stunt.

While some called it ’stupid’, ‘brainless’ and ‘uncivilised’, most seemed to give the thumbs up.

One friend even thought that the stunt was not a big deal and that different ‘people have fun differently’.

One of the culprits seemed smug about the whole incident, even bragging that there will be a ‘next time’.

Disaster if killer litter bricks hit someone instead of car

disaster if bricks hit someone instead of car thumbnail Disaster if killer litter bricks hit someone instead of car

STOMPer Ling thought these bricks at Tampines Block 485B had dropped off a truck until she saw the shattered rear window of this car. The STOMPer is grateful that the killer litter didn’t hit anyone using the walkway.

"Saw this at around 5.30am when driving my friend to the airport.

"When I arrived at the block, there were lots of brick/stones on the road.

"Thought they were debris fell off from a rubbish truck, until I went to the lift landing and saw the damaged car.

"As this car was parked just outside the walkway to the lift landing, it could be a disaster should the bricks fell on someone instead of the car."

Brazen car thieves make away with rear tyres of car in HDB multi-storey carpark

brazen car thieves make away with rear tyres of car in hdb thumbnail Brazen car thieves make away with rear tyres of car in HDB multi storey carpark

Beware car owners: your car may be targeted by thieves even if you’re parked in an HDB carpark. Using a small jack and brick, thieves had stripped this car of its rear wheels.

STOMPer Mexx was shocked when he saw the state of his Lancer EX 2.0 in the morning on Jan 19. The car was parked near Block 299, Compassvale Street.

He thinks that the thieves struck in the early hours of Jan 19, and he is appealing for witnesses.

In an email to us on 21 Jan, he recounted the story to us:

"On 19 Jan 2010 7am, when I went to my car in the HDB MSCP, I was shocked to see that both of my rear 17" sport rims and tyres were missing!!!

"The rear of the car was supported by a very small jack and a brick.

"I called the police immediately.

"The CSI have already dusted my car for finger prints.

"I have lost my rear two wheels and both my side skirtings were damaged by the jack and the brick while the car was supported by them.

"In fact, while waiting for the tow truck to come, the jack was bent and the brick was cracking under the weight of the car.

"I can see that the exhaust was already depressed on the kerb. It was really frustrating to see the car in such a state!!

"I am staying in Blk 299 Compassvale Street. Does anyone have similar experiences?

"Or did anyone witness anything on 19 Jan 2010 between 0000 – 0700hrs?"
