BEIJING : One woman taking part in China’s annual parliamentary meetings has learned that law-making has its drawbacks — especially when you provoke savvy web users.

After Yan Qi, a member of China’s legislative advisory body, said she would propose a nationwide ban on private Internet cafes, hackers paralysed the website of her restaurant chain, state media reported Thursday.

Yan, whose business is based in the southwest city of Chongqing, had blamed Internet cafes for social ills ranging from school truancy and petty theft to video game addiction, the Global Times newspaper reported.

"Many serious problems are linked to Internet cafes and businesspeople usually ignore their social responsibilities," Yan was quoted as saying.

"Desperate diseases must have drastic cures, which is to ban them all."

Yan was to propose the ban at the annual gathering of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which began Wednesday, suggesting that state-run cybercafes should be set up.

Chinese hackers vented their anger by repeatedly hacking into the website of her restaurant chain, Taoranju, changing the home page and removing links.

An employee told the newspaper the website had "become a target for everyone" and despite repeated attempts to repair it, the attacks were expected to continue until the controversy dies down.

The restaurateur is one of 2,374 hand-picked members of the CPPCC that includes athletes, billionaires, film stars and farmers. Former Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang and director Zhang Yimou are among the delegates.

China is home to the world’s largest web population, with 384 million people online. The country has more than 81,000 Internet cafes with 4.7 million computers.

Loan sharks don’t give chance, not even on Chinese New Year!

loan sharks dont give chance thumbnail Loan sharks dont give chance, not even on Chinese New Year!

STOMPer Reef said loan sharks are simply getting too bold. His neighbour’s flat in Admiralty Drive was splashed with paint on the eve of Chinese New Year yesterday (Feb 13), in broad daylight.

"My neighbour’s front gate was splashed with paint at about 5pm on the eve of Chinese New Year yesterday.

"The loan sharks are too much, they don’t give chance, even on Chinese New Year.

"This is not the first time this particular neighbour’s flat was attacked by loan sharks.

"Last time, they even threw out potted plants in the dustbin, thinking that they belonged to that neighbour.

"They used to write the ‘owe money pay money’ sign at the stairwell too."

Think of your children’s future when eating shark’s fin this Chinese New Year

think of your children when eating sharks fin this cny thumbnail Think of your childrens future when eating sharks fin this Chinese New Year

With the Chinese New Year season approaching, STOMPer Jennifer wants to warn Singaporeans about the long term environmental effects of consuming and supporting the shark’s fin industry.

According to the STOMPer, the excessive killing of sharks for their fins will damage the ocean’s eco-system, and affect sources of seafood for future generation.

"We are hitting peak season, for a profit-driven, multi-billion dollar industry that has seemingly unstoppable potential of eventually causing the demise of our future generations.

"But hey, isn’t it a wonder that we are the ones fuelling this industry through our own demands; demands coming from people who either don’t know or don’t care.

"Shark fin trading is no longer just about protecting declining shark populations – it’s about protecting our future generations.

"Sharks prey on fishes that feeds on phytoplankton, hence controlling population of the plankton feeders. With the decline of sharks population, we can expect a sharp, steady decline in phytoplankton which is responsible for taking in carbon dioxide (the culprit for global warming) and turning them into oxygen in the water.

"Killing of sharks at the current merciless rates will greatly impact the entire ocean’s oxygen supply and eco-system.

"We rely on the ocean for food and we are causing damage that is serious enough to destroy our major food source – the prawns, tuna, snappers, etc fishes that you used to have on your plates may not be available in generations to come if the entire ocean dies.

"Let’s not forget the fact that the Earth is made up of 70% water, and that water cycle is such that water from the sea will evaporate and form part of the air that we breathe.

"Singaporeans are living right where a large portion of the fins are traded annually. This means we have control over the situation, we have the option of saying no, and we have the ability of influencing and reducing the demand for shark fin.

"It is questionable why we are paying so much for a “delicacy” that we don’t even know what it actually taste like. Simply because the fins are tasteless.

"What we are actually enjoying, is the taste of chicken / pork stock, alongside other ingredients that gives flavor to the dish. And to think that the insistence of buying tasteless food and paying for them at ridiculous prices, is a mockery on its own.

"If Singaporean loves hanging the statement “Rules are meant to be broken” around their lips, why then are we so obedient in continuing the fin-eating Chinese tradition, which we should have long neglected? If so many Singaporeans seek to be a class on our own, casting aside associations we have of our natives, why then are we following our natives blindly on such a tradition?

"If you are eating shark fins this Chinese New Year, think twice if you have plans carrying forth your next generation."

cupid replaces pig in chinese zodiac thumbnail Cupid replaces Pig in this Chinese zodiac

STOMPer J was left puzzled when he saw that McDonald’s had replaced the pig in the Chinese Zodiac with Cupid.

Their latest promotion is a set of Doraemon soft toys featuring the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and the STOMPer is curious as to why the pig is missing.

In an email to us today (Jan 4), the STOMPer said:

"As far as I know, there is no "Year of the Cupid".

"Can McDonald’s explain why there is no Pig?"
