Daredevil NTU shuttle bus drivers from China endanger lives on campus

ntu bus knocks elderly woman off bike what can be done thumbnail Daredevil NTU shuttle bus drivers from China endanger lives on campus

Something needs to be done about the reckless China drivers of the NTU shuttle buses, says a STOMPer, who was travelling on board a bus which knocked an elderly lady off her bicycle yesterday morning (Jan 18).

This is not the first time the STOMPer has witnessed reckless driving on board the bus.

Sometimes, the drivers drive while talking over the phone and beat traffic lights as well, he says.

Such behaviour needs to be stopped, says the sender, who believes that most of the drivers are foreigners and weren’t trained according to Singapore’s rules and traffic conditions

The STOMPer says in an email dated January 18:

“I feel that I have the moral responsibility to highlight the issue of how reckless Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) shuttle bus drivers are.

“Many of them are from China and have perhaps brought their reckless driving habits to Singapore.

“I have personally seen how drivers behave in China and feel that they are in fact one of the worst drivers in the world.

“I was on board the NTU shuttle bus from Pioneer MRT to NTU today at about 9:45am.

“As it was entering NTU (from Pioneer Road North into Nanyang Drive), it knocked down an old lady who was cycling on the left side of the bus.

“As a result, the old lady fell off her bicycle and suffered some bruises to her arm.

“She looked to be in a state of shock and it deeply saddened me to see her sitting on the kerb, groaning in pain.

“I take the NTU shuttle bus almost daily and have witnessed much reckless behaviour including beating of traffic lights, using the handphone while driving on campus, failing to give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings amongst other dangerous acts.

“I seriously hope the relevant parties such as NTU, Tong Tar Transport (shuttle bus operator engaged by NTU), or even the Traffic Police can look into the matter and deal with these extremely reckless drivers.

“Please do something before someone is seriously injured or even killed due to their recklessness.

“I believe daily commuters on the NTU shuttle bus will agree with me on this.”

Drivers park illegally, then quarrel with guard and refuse to move

drivers park illegally thumbnail Drivers park illegally, then quarrel with guard and refuse to move

A commotion outside Parkway Parade on Boxing Day, saw not one, but three illegally parked car drivers refusing to move their vehicles to make space for the shuttle bus. The drivers even argued with the guard.

One of the drivers waited for his wife and kids before finally moving off, while the other couldn’t even bother to care.

Says this STOMPer:

"The illegal parking at the carpark entrance of parkway parade is very common everyday, and their free shuttle bus always get caught there as the bus could not make a u-turn due to both sides of the road blocked by illegal parking.

"Most of the time, it’s just a couple of minutes delay as those illegal parked cars will move away when the bus comes.

"But on boxing day around 2 pm, a truck was parked on one side and three cars were parked on the other side.

"The truck driver did move a bit for the shuttle bus to reverse.

"However, three car drivers were not so compromising. The driver of the first car, who blocked the bus, refused to move immediately and even argued with the security guard. Luckily, he was convinced by his passenger to drive off, after the security signalled him to.

"The owner of the second car also did not drive off immediately. he waited for his wife and kid.

"Finally the first car moved-off and just about the same time, the second car wanted to move off, but a third car came into the picture, and the driver was not going to move.

"The driver of the second car had to reverse back to move out.

"Notice from the beginning till the end, the driver in the third car did not even bother to find out what is going on.

"After the road clears, there will be a chain of cars moving out of the building, which were previously stuck because of these three cars.

"There were alot honking and those illegal parked cars just don’t seem to hear it, taking their own sweet time to move and one even don’t bother.

"Why are they allowed to park there in the first place? Maybe install CCTVs and fine those illegal parked cars could help?"

In a separate accident along Upper Serangoon Road early this morning, a vehicle flipped onto its side after apparently hitting the curb.

STOMPer Christopher wrote:

"This car flipped on its side and skidded about 50m from where it hit the right hand side curb along Upper Seragoon Road.

"The driver and passenger looked unhurt from where we were as they were rescued by cars that had stopped to help."

Do APEC drivers get special privileges to park in handicap lots?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

apec vehicle parked in handicapped lot thumbnail Do APEC drivers get special privileges to park in handicap lots?

STOMPer Vincent was shocked to see this vehicle bearing an APEC license plate parked in a handicap lot at Bedok Reservoir Road. He had earlier spotted the driver using the vehicle for personal reasons.

In an email to STOMP today (Nov 11), the STOMPer said:

“It was a startling surprise for residents at Bedok Reservoir Road Block 117 to see this APEC-designated vehicle pulling up and parking at a handicap lot.

"This occurred on Nov 10, at approximately 8:30 in the evening.

"The driver of the APEC vehicle had parked there to drop off a friend, dressed in a t-shirt and bermudas.

"A witness made a call to the authorities and was told that an enforcement team was on its way.

"About half an hour later, the enforcement team had arrived but the vehicle was long gone.

“It seems like the driver thought that he had special privileges and could break the law for driving an APEC vehicle.

"Does driving a vehicle marked for one of the most important diplomatic events of the year make the driver immune to laws and regulations?
