20100311.091633 attack Man armed with hammer assaults pre school children in class

MUAR, Malaysia – The happy chatter of children turned into screams of horror when an unidentified man armed with a hammer barged into a kindergarten here and bludgeoned three six-year-olds.

In the morning incident which shocked the residents of the usually peaceful Lorong Haji Ali, the man rode up to the kindergarten and parked his motorcycle outside.

Holding a hammer in one hand, he climbed over the fence and kicked open the locked grill that led to the main hall of Tadika Sinario.

Some 20 children were having breakfast at the time, under the watchful eyes of kindergarten operator Voon Siew Kuin, 45.

The children were at first shocked to see a stranger charging into their kindergarten, but became horrified when violence unfolded in the next few minutes.

Voon tried to attract the attention of the man by repeatedly asking him: "You cari siapa? (Who are you looking for?)".

Agitated, the small-built man threw pepper powder at her and hit her with the hammer.

As she groaned in pain, the man began to wildly swing the hammer at the children.

Three of them, including a girl, were hit on the head.

The other children screamed as they tried to flee.

The man then ran away when Voon recovered and chased after him with a broom.

When he reached his motorcycle, he threatened Voon by waving the hammer at her before riding away.

Apart from her, the only other adult at the kindergarten was a helper in her 50s.

She was in the kitchen when the attack happened.

Voon and the assistant rushed the three children to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital at about 10.20am as they were bleeding profusely on the head.

The two boys, Vincent Tey and Alex Tan, and the girl, Nur Nadrah Nabilah Mohd Yusri, underwent emergency treatment, including thorough head scans.

Nur Nadrah’s father Mohd Yusri Mukhlis was thankful that his daughter was not critically hurt.

He was horrified when he was earlier misinformed that Nur Nadrah had died. His wife, Farah Asyikin Abu Samah, went limp when she heard the news.

"We were relieved when we met the doctors at the hospital and were told of her condition," he said at the hospital.

The three children were later sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru.

Girl suffocated in over-crowded school van

A four-year-old girl died after travelling on an overcrowded school van in China.

Wu Yinuo, who had just completed her second day of kindergarten, was stuffed in a seven-seater van with some 30 children last Friday.

She suffered breathing difficulties and her face turned pale 10 minutes after the van left the pre-school, about 2km from her home, reported China Daily.

The girl was sent to hospital at about 4pm and died six hours later.

She was believed to have died of suffocation.

Yinou’s uncle Xue Lei alleged that the van driver did not attend to the girl immediately.

"The driver sent two other students back home before sending Yinou to the hospital," he told Xinhua Net.

Dr Zhu Guirong of the Che Ma Hu Hospital said the girl was unconscious and her lips had turned purple when he attended to her.

The minibus was a non-commercial vehicle that had been illegally hired by the private kindergarten in Rugao, Jiangsu province, to take the students to school and send them home.

The owners of the private kindergarten – one of the biggest in the city with some 200 students – are under police surveillance and investigations are underway.

Residents said the school van had always been over-crowded and nothing had been done despite their complaints.

They claimed that the same school van was also involved in an accident about two years ago when two children fell off the vehicle after its door was forced opened due to overcrowding.

Students in uniform get ‘married’ in school

students in uniform get married in school thumbnail Students in uniform get married in school

STOMPer Ohemgee is amused by these pictures of Singaporean students exchanging rings and apparently getting ‘married’ while being egged on by their friends. The STOMPer asked: "Shouldn’t they be focusing on their studies at this age?"

In the STOMPer’s message:

"In this video we see a bunch of students in their uniforms fooling around in what looks like their school compound, and recording the entire proceedings which they apparently intend to post online.

"The guy got on his knees to ‘propose’ with a bouquet of flowers.

"The guy also evidently prepared ‘couple rings’ to be exchanged.

"After lots of giggling and encouragement from their friends, the couple kissed after exchanging rings.

"This may be harmless fun, but shouldn’t these students be focusing on their studies at this age, instead of pretending to be adults?"
