Sending SMS on plane cost woman S$3,500

TAIPEI, Taiwan – A woman onboard a plane in Taipei was fined NT$80,000 (S$3,500) for texting her friend right before take-off despite warnings by the crew.

In the afternoon of Dec. 4, 2009, 49-year-old Chen was on a Mandarin Airline flight from SongShan Airport to Kinmen.

After the crew notified passengers to stop using electronic devices, she kept on inputting on her cell phone, typing up a text message to her friend, according to the Taipei District Court.

Crew members tried to stop Chen as soon as they noticed, but Chen refused to turn off her cell phone and yelled, “I must do this. It’s important!”.

The plane was directed back and the woman was arrested at the gate by aviation police.

The Taipei District Court handed the woman a NT$80,000 fine for breaking the Civil Aviation Law.

The case is open to appeal.

As stated in Article 102 of the Civil Aviation Law, using disruptive electronic devices on a plane is punishable by a sentence of up to 5 years, detainment, or a fine of up to NT$150,000.

Offenders causing death could receive a sentence between seven years to life. Offenders causing severe injuries are punishable by a three-year to ten-year sentence.

mercedes cabby sends me rude sms because i cancel cab booking thumbnail Mercedes cab driver sends me rude SMS because I cancel booking

A STOMPer cancelled a cab booking, but was shocked to receive a rude SMS from the taxi driver himself.

The STOMPer said: "I cancelled a cab booking and the cab driver sent me rude SMSes."

The cab driver apparently accused the STOMPer of being selfish for cancelling the booking because he got another cab.

However, the STOMPer said he had called the taxi driver to ask him where he was because he could not see the cab, but the cabby did not pick up the call. The STOMPer said he had cancelled the booking not because he got another cab, but because he thought the booking made through his iPhone indicated the wrong waiting place.

When the STOMPer replied to cabby, saying that his company would not approve of the ride text messages, the cabby replied that he was self-employed and that his rental had got nothing to do with his text messages.

The STOMPer added: "What happened to the service in our public transport industry? This cabby drives a Mercedes Benz Cab SHA 518Z. Beware!"

Starhub’s web SMS does not work with their iPhones

web sms does not work well with iphone thumbnail Starhub’s web SMS does not work with their iPhones

After sending 2 long SMSes using Starhub’s WebSMS service on the iPhone, the message box is full and subsequent messages are not displayed in the message box, says annoyed STOMPer Suyi.

In an email to STOMP today (Dec 15), the STOMPer says:

“One of the main reasons of me buying the iPhone is to use Starhub’s WebSMS service by using the Safari internet browser.

“Unfortunately, Starhub’s WebSMS does not work well in an iPhone environment.

“After sending 2 long SMSes using Starhub’s WebSMS service, the message box is full and subsequent messages will not be displayed in the message box.

“I will not be able to view any other new message after the message box is filled up. Refer to the picture, I have circled the name in red to indicate that all I need is to do is to send 2 long SMSes to fill up the message box.

“With Starhub’s launch of the iPhone and many people rushing to buy the iPhone, I hope Starhub can at least make its websites and applications compatible and user-friendly for the phones they are trying hard to sell and market.

“I’ve also called Starhub’s customer service hotline several times but none of them are able to provide me with any solutions yet (worst when their call centre is not local and I have to speak to foreigners about my issue and not so sure if they understand where the problem lies).”

Her son spent $1,700 on M1’s SMS contest

A 60-year-old housewife complained that her son had spent some $1,700 on an SMS contest, but had failed to win a single prize despite the huge number of entries submitted.

Mrs Zhong spoke to local Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News, complaining that her son had participated in local telco M1’s "Die Die Must Win" SMS contest since September.

The contest was held for 12 weeks between 31 August and 22 November this year.

Participants had to SMS "WIN" to an M1 contest number, then answer various questions in order to earn points. The more points one has, the higher the chance of winning a prize in the daily draw or weekly draws.

Prizes were attractive – daily winners stand to walk away with a BenQ laptop, while weekly prize winners get to win a Honda car. In all, there were 84 laptops and 12 cars to be won. Each SMS costs $2.

As he was unaware of the contest’s SMS charges, Mrs Zhong’s song had participated very actively in the contest. He only stopped when he learned from a friend that there were fees for every entry he sent.

By then, Mrs Zhong told Shin Min, her son had already sent 909 entries, racking up a total of $1699.83 in mobile phone bills

Despite the large amount of money "invested" in the contest, Mrs Zhong said that her son had failed to win a single prize in both the daily and weekly draws.

An M1 spokesman said that participants in its SMS contest earn points for every question answered correctly. Points are then accumulated and the participant who has the most points at the end of the day wins the BenQ laptop.

The participant who has the most points at the end of each week wins the Honda, but winners of the daily BenQ laptops too, stand a chance at getting the car.
