Embassy car parked in bus lane: Is staff abusing diplomatic privileges?

embassy driver parks in bus lane thumbnail Embassy car parked in bus lane: Is staff abusing diplomatic privileges?

STOMPer John is appalled that embassy staff can get away with breaking laws in Singapore after spotting this embassy car parked in a bus lane near Funan Centre. Does diplomatic immunity cover this kind of illegal acts, the STOMPer asks.

The STOMPer said in an email:

"I have been following the case of the former Romanian Charge d’Affaires Dr. Silviu lonescu in extreme shock.

"What does diplomatic immunity actually mean?

"I seriously doubt it means that embassy staff and personnel are permitted to go about their daily lives, breaking laws under a name or umbrella of diplomatic immunity.

"Here is a recent incident that I have photographed.

"An embassy driver had parked or stopped in a bus lane on Saturday, 27 Feb, at about 5pm or later, in front of the Hill Street side of Funan Centre.

"He was having a smoke break while waiting for some embassy staff member to perhaps finish shopping.

"Indeed, I doubt that this stop was in the capacity of an official embassy mission, requiring the driver to break a minor Singapore traffic law.

"Does diplomatic immunity cover this kind of law breaking acts?

"I seriously doubt it but I have often seen many embassy drivers in Singapore crossing the line.

"They break minor traffic laws, under the notion, perhaps, that they are covered under a name or umbrella of diplomatic immunity.

"This should be examined a bit closer and stopped."

How to be world-class casino when RWS staff don’t even know the rules?

disappointing experience at casino thumbnail How to be world class casino when RWS staff dont even know the rules?

A STOMPer is upset and disappointed with his experience at the Resorts World Casino Sentosa, which he visited with his girlfriend on Feb 18.

First, he had to wait before the staff figured out that his ID was valid, then they closed the tables of the game which he likes gambling in.

In his email to STOMP, he wrote:

“I arrived at the casino at around 2100 hours with questions on my mind.

“I wondered if the day levy will expire after midnight or it would be 24 consecutive hours from the time of the first entry into the casino.

“Just then, a kind staff approached me with a sweet smile asking if I needed any help. When I posed my question to her, I was surprised that she was not sure either.

“She was kind enough to offer to check for me anyway.

“Next, to enter the casino, Singaporeans have to scan their IC or driving license. When I produced my 11B, a female staff stopped me at that point and requested for the correct card to be scan.

“So I questioned her:  ‘Do u know what this card is?’

"Surprisingly the female staff did not know of the existence of 11B at all.

“The casino was crowded that night when I entered around 2130 hours.

“An average of about 15 – 20 people were crowding around a table game.

“What I can say is, you can consider yourself really lucky if you are able to find a seat at any table game.

“I enjoy playing the table game ‘three pictures’ also known as ‘san gong’ a lot.

“I needed to find a seat to sit down. But I ended up standing for one night and left the casino shortly after midnight.

“Thinking that maybe later in the night, the place would be less crowded, my girlfriend and I took a walk around the festival walk and other places then.

“When we return at 0310 hours, true enough, the crowd had gone.

“However, I am truly disappointed with management’s decision to close all the ‘3 picture’ tables at that time too.

“The staff themselves were not aware that all the ‘3 picture’ tables were closed and still asked me to move to other sector of the casino for that game.

“I’m so unhappy that I actually teased the management if I could refund my levy or not?

“Can somebody tell me which casino around the world closed a particular game after a certain time?

“Isn’t a casino open 24/7? The casino also close down some sectors and cut down the number of table for other table games and resulting crowds surround the limited tables then.

“It is a disappointing experience for me. I didn’t play much.

“Overall I lost $25 because of the levy.”

Lady service staff tells us: ‘You won’t die from eating rotten mussels and fish head’

lady service staff tells us thumbnail Lady service staff tells us: You wont die from eating rotten mussels and fish head

STOMPer nikeboi1984 and his friends were served rotten mussels and fish head at a steamboat restaurant, yet the lady service staff told them that they won’t die from eating it, and made them pay for half of the bill.

The STOMPer recounts:

"My friends and I went to this steamboat place on Jan 30.

"The way the restaurant works is that the customers tick what kind of food they want on the ingredient list, and the staff will bring them to the table.

"The mussels and fish head brought to us had a rotten smell.

"We asked for new servings twice, but it was still the same.

"What’s worse, the lady-in-charge (a China lady shown in photo standing in counter) said that we won’t die from eating such spoiled food.

"In the end I had to pay half of the bill ($39) without eating a single thing.

"All four of us did not eat at all.

"I had already emailed to NEA yesterday and they are looking into this matter. I am posting here just to share with all STOMPers to be wary of this steamboat shop."

Coffeeshop staff pours boiling water on loud customer

Mr Sanusi suffered serious injuries over about 40 per cent of his body.

Malaysia, January 21, 2010 – A SHOUT for an order of tea
brought more than a cuppa when a man was scalded over a large part of his body.

An agitated coffee shop worker in the Tanah Merah district of Kelantan poured boiling water on Mr Sanusi Othman, 31, a trader, when the latter raised his voice while making an order.

As a result, Mr Sanusi suffered serious injuries over about 40 per cent of his body.

He said he had taken his motorcycle out and rode it to the shop in the middle of town at about 10pm on Jan 4, reported Harian Metro.

He said: “I was alone and was wearing a T-shirt and a sarong.

“I sat down and made the order but the worker did not seem to hear it. So, I shouted the order again.

“I had a shock when he came from behind, carrying a can filled with boiling water.”

When met by New Straits Times at his house at Kampung Pondok Lama, he said: “It happened so fast that I only managed to block him from pouring it on my face.”

Mr Sanusi said he scuffled with the worker before he was taken home, writhing in pain, by a friend in a car.

He said: “I had to strip off the T-shirt and sarong I had on because it was simply too hot.

“By coincidence, a friend who was at a snooker centre nearby heard about the incident and appeared on the scene and sent me home.”

Despite the injuries, Mr Sanusi did not report the incident to the police or go for treatment at the hospital because his family did not want the case to be prolonged as the worker was a close relative.

He added: “His mother and uncle came to see my family and apologised for the incident.

“However, I lodged a police report two days ago on the advice of a cousin.”

Family shocked

Mr Sanusi’s father, Mr Othman Said, 70, said the family was shocked when he was sent home by a friend with one part of the body badly scalded.

“We believe that there is more to this than the shouting incident which led to the attack,” he said.

The suspect, who is also a car broker, had earlier tricked Mr Sanusi’s younger brother into buying a car.

Added Mr Othman: “He was angry with us for asking him to return the money.”

Chief of police in the district, Deputy Superintendent Abdul Aziz Mahmud, confirmed the incident.

A man in his 30s has been detained by the police.

staff unbothered when confronted about mouldy food thumbnail Staff unbothered when confronted about mouldy food

STOMPer Purple_Nite would like to warn fellow STOMPers about a Korean food stall (Stall 15) she visited at Suntec City Fountain Food Terrace which served mouldy food to her.

In an email to us today (18 Jan), she said:

"I ordered Kimchi noodles and it came with a side-dish of Ikan Bilis.

"I found out that the side-dish was mouldy and it has an unpleasant smell, so I went back to the stall to feedback to the staff.

"No action was taken and they were talking among themselves.

"For those who frequent this stall, please check before consuming the food."
