If you think hazing in Singapore schools are bad, South Korean students have it worse. A graduation ritual in schools across the country apparently forces both male and female students to go naked, while eggs were thrown at them and pictures of them were taken.

According to a South Korean news website, since 3am last Saturday, about 40 pictures of naked or half-naked middle school graduating students in Goyang, Gyeonggi have been spread rapidly online.

The pictures include one which shows the students making a human pyramid with their bodies covered in flour and eggs, and others showing them standing still covering their private parts or removing their underwear.

Fifteen of the original hazing victims told police that they received text messages from the older students forcing them to attend the ritual or they would be punished.

Twenty high school students involved in the hazing will be questioned by South Korean police.

The police said offenders can get criminal punishments since they will be charged with an attempted act of violence.

While STOMP has received several stories on students complaining about hazing in their schools, perhaps they can count themselves lucky that such rituals here are not as extreme as that in South Korea.

STOMPer howcanlikethis appeals to NTU undergrads to stop destroying the reputation of their school with vulgar and xenophobic graffiti on the campus.

Someone had posted pictures of various campus graffiti on a social network.

In the STOMPer’s email:

"Someone posted this up in a rumor mongering group on Facebook for NTU.

"Is this how undergrads from a respectable university are supposed to behave?

"Look at all the foul words and xenophobic messages.

"Please stop destroying the reputation of our own school."

Foul-mouthed undergrads bicker about foreign students getting more benefits

foulmouthed undergrads complain about foreign students in nus thumbnail Foul mouthed undergrads bicker about foreign students getting more benefits

STOMPer Cyber policeman is stunned by netizens, who are apparently undergraduates, hurling expletives and vulgarities at each other in an online argument about foreign students receiving more benefits here.

The STOMPer is concerned how these foul-mouthed netizens may represent Singapore’s brightest students.

"Someone sent me a link to the website given and when I visited the website I was extremely shocked to read the debates and arguments between some  of our brightest students in the local universities.

"Some of them claimed to have four As and two S papers.

"They were arguing about the privileges and opportunities of local and foreign students in NUS and NTU.  The local students resented the overabundance of foreign students and the extra privileges given to them.

"But what irks me is the type of language and insults they hurled at one another.

"They called each other "morons" and "fuck".

"If this is a cross section of our future graduates then we have much cause to worry.  Why are our undergrads so foul-mouthed and uncouth?

"I am simply stunned."

2 undergrads found dead in 2 weeks: Too much pressure on S’pore youth?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

2 undergrads found dead in span of thumbnail 2 undergrads found dead in 2 weeks: Too much pressure on Spore youth?

After reading about the suicides of two NTU undergraduates, found within two weeks of each other, a STOMPer wonders if there are underlying issues causing young people to resort to taking their own lives.

Perhaps young people are experiencing more and more pressure these days from all factors in their lives, suggests the STOMPer.

Although the cases are not related to each other, their close proximity is a warning sign that young Singaporeans are experiencing more stress and also increasingly finding it hard to deal with.

Such pressures may not only come from academia, says the sender.

According to the Straits Times on January 27, one of the women was said to be a good student while the other had just started her course in civil engineering.

Perhaps the younger generation has too much on their plate, causing them to seek death as a way out of their problems.

Hoping something can be done to ease the load on their backs, the STOMPer says:

The STOMPer says:

“Yesterday’s newspapers reported the recent suicides of two NTU girls.

“Though the incidents are separate, it makes me wonder why the incidents happened only two weeks apart and if young people are resorting to suicide more often these days.

“They were both young, well-educated and probably had bright futures ahead of them. One of them was even scoring consistent good grades.

“What could make them so depressed that they would give all that up and take their own lives?

“Are Singaporeans too stressed out? Is it really tough for local university students to maintain a healthy outlook on life?

“Or were these girls troubled by relationship problems and felt they had no way out?

“Although we’ll never know why they committed suicide, I do hope that we can re-evaluate the quality of life young people are experiencing.

“Hopefully something can be done to help young people overcome tough times so that they don’t easily resort to suicide as a solution.”
